On Sunday, March 15th, the Divine Warrior Witches gathered at Crescent Moon Gifts in Tacoma to celebrate Ostara, the Spring Equinox, and the sacred threshold between winter’s stillness and spring’s awakening. This year’s ritual, Persephone’s Return, honored the journey from shadow into bloom through herbal medicine, guided movement, a tea ceremony, and the mythic return of Persephone from the Underworld.

Through pomegranate, rose, breath, and ritual embodiment, we explored what it means not simply to survive the dark, but to emerge from it transformed.

The Wheel of the Year turns, carrying us from the quiet threshold of Imbolc into the living balance of Ostara, the Spring Equinox. Here, light and dark meet as equals. Neither dominates the other; instead, both honor the necessity of their counterpart.

At Ostara, we witness the world awakening. Soil softens, buds bloom, birds sing, and creatures emerge from den and burrow, drawn toward warmth, nourishment, and connection.

This year, our rite centered on Persephone, Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Spring. Persephone descends into the underworld and rises again, carrying wisdom from the depths. She returns crowned by experience.

As Persephone reunites with Demeter, fertility and movement return to the land. Yet her story reminds us that nothing sacred is wasted in the dark.

This season’s herbal focus centered on the sacred symbolism and healing properties of pomegranate and rose: two plant allies deeply intertwined with the myth of Persephone.

Rowan introduced the physical and historical properties of the pomegranate, Punica granatum, a fruit long valued across ancient civilizations for its medicinal and nutritional qualities. Rich in antioxidants, tannins, and vibrant ruby pigments, pomegranate has been used historically to support digestion, purification, vitality, and restoration. Its peel, seeds, and juice all carry powerful botanical properties that have endured across centuries of traditional healing.

Jasper explored the metaphysical significance of the pomegranate. Across mythology and spiritual traditions, the fruit symbolizes fertility, abundance, transformation, and the cyclical dance between life, death, and rebirth. In the myth of Persephone, the pomegranate becomes a sacred threshold fruit; a symbol of initiation and return.

Rose accompanied the pomegranate throughout the evening’s workings, offering softness, heart-opening, and emotional renewal. Together, these plant allies guided practitioners through a ritual of emergence, encouraging both tenderness and courage as spring begins again.

THE OSTARA RITUAL

Candles in ornate holders, flowers, a white statue, and an "Ostara" plaque on a table with a cosmic backdrop, creating a mystical ambiance.

The evening unfolded as rite of return.

After anointing, circle casting, and the welcoming of Persephone and the Rising Sun God into the sacred space, practitioners settled onto yoga mats and blankets, preparing to descend inward before rising again.

Part One | The Tea Ceremony of Initiation

The ritual began with the retelling of Persephone’s descent and transformation. As the story unfolded, practitioners were invited to consider their own relationship to winter, rest, and renewal.

A sacred tea blend of pomegranate and rose was then offered as a symbolic choice: to remain in the Underworld of winter or to consciously begin the journey upward into warmth, movement, and becoming.

As tea cups were passed hand to hand, the room repeated together:

“I drink of thee and choose to rise.”

Part Two | Root to Bloom Meditation

Through breathwork and gentle embodied movement, practitioners journeyed from darkness toward light.

Beginning in stillness, participants imagined themselves as seeds beneath frozen soil, carrying only the faintest ember of warmth within. Slowly, through breath and movement, that inner flame expanded: pale yellow becoming gold, gold becoming orange, orange becoming radiant pink.

The meditation guided practitioners through grounding poses, flowing movements, and symbolic ascension from the Underworld into the Upper World, culminating in mountain pose beneath the imagined warmth of the spring sun.

“You have sprouted like a seed and unfurled into the beautiful, courageous, and mighty warrior you always were.”

Part Three | Medicinal Crafting

Following the meditation, the community gathered to create herbal body scrubs infused with coconut oil, lemon, rose, sugar, and pomegranate powder.

As jars were blended and blessed, the priestesses led a communal chant:

“Spring awakens in my heart.”

The evening closed with the shared creation, soft conversation, and the feeling of winter finally beginning to loosen its grip.

Thank You to the Divine Warrior Witches Community

This Ostara ritual was a sacred reminder that growth is not sudden. It is cyclical, patient, and deeply earned. Through story, movement, tea, herbs, and shared presence, we honored both the darkness that shaped us and the light now calling us forward.

Thank you for bringing your openness, tenderness, courage, and joy into this space. Your willingness to rise together is what makes this community so powerful.

May Persephone’s journey remind you that you are allowed to emerge slowly. May the warmth of spring meet you gently. May what has rooted deeply within you now begin to bloom.

In perfect love, and perfect trust, blessed be.
